In celebration of 50 years on the East End, we catch up with Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons’ executive director and CEO, Kimberly Nichols, to talk summer plans and the upcoming Bow Wow Meow Ball.
Available for adoption! Meet Sahteene aka “Teeny,” a beautiful 7-year-old white shepherd mix. She knows her basic commands, is house-trained and can’t wait to learn more.
Tell us about your connection with animals and what initially inspired you to join the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons.
I’ve always believed in the power of compassion and community in making a difference. My career has been centered around giving a voice to the voiceless. For many years, I’ve worked with various nonprofits, advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves like those at the end of life (hospice) or families affected by violence and abuse (The Retreat and SafeArt). This lifelong dedication to nonprofit work and advocacy has equipped me with the skills and determination to lead ARF effectively.
A pivotal experience for me was working with hospice nurses in Middlebury, Vt., where I assisted in trapping barn cats for TNR (trap-neuter-return) clinics. These nurses, who spent their days caring for terminally ill patients, still found time to help control the local cat population. Their selflessness and commitment to both human and animal welfare deeply inspired me and reinforced my belief in the power of community action.
It’s this incredible synergy between humans and animals that drew me to ARF. Seeing the transformative impact that love and care can have on an animal in need is incredibly rewarding. I wanted to be part of an organization that not only rescues animals but also fosters a sense of community around animal welfare.
ARF has a full calendar of special events all year long, ranging from private soirees and dog walks to adoption events and group activities like kitten yoga.
What is the organization’s goal for the Hamptons community and their pets?
The goal of ARF is to create a compassionate and responsible community where every pet has a loving home and receives the care they deserve. We aim to achieve this through several key initiatives: rescue and rehabilitation, adoption services, education and outreach, and several support services. By focusing on these goals, ARF aims to enhance the quality of life for both pets and their owners. We are dedicated to building a community where animals are valued, protected, and treated with kindness and respect.
ARF is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the East End. How have you seen the Hamptons community support the organization throughout the years?
As ARF celebrates its 50th anniversary, I am continually amazed and grateful for the unwavering support we have received throughout the years. Our journey began with the vision and dedication of our founding mothers, who laid the groundwork for ARF and continues under the leadership of ARF’s current board of directors. Their passion and commitment to animal welfare sets the tone for a community-driven organization that has flourished over the last five decades.
From the beginning, ARF has been 100% funded by contributions from generous donors, supporters and volunteers. This incredible support network has been the backbone of our organization, enabling us to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home countless animals. The community’s dedication to our mission is evident in every fundraiser, every adoption event and every act of kindness that comes our way.
before dining and dancing at the Bow Wow Meow Ball, guests have a chance to meet and show love to ARF’s furry friends.
Would you like to buzz any special anniversary events for the summer?
This summer, ARF has a lineup of special events that promise fun and excitement while supporting our mission of animal rescue and welfare. On the lineup are ARF private soirees, the Bow Wow Meow Ball, Stroll to the Sea Dog Walk, ARF Thrift & Treasure shop sales and an array of adoption events. Keep an eye on our website, arfhamptons.org, and social media channels, @arfhamptons, for updates and additional event announcements. We look forward to seeing you there!
Let’s talk about the Bow Wow Meow Ball this August. What can guests expect from the event?
The true stars of the Bow Wow Meow Ball are, without a doubt, the animals themselves. From adorable puppies and kittens to adult dogs and cats, each furry attendee steals the spotlight with their irresistible charm and heartwarming tales of resilience. Their presence serves as a poignant reminder of the impact that love and compassion can have on the lives of animals in need.
Throughout the evening, attendees will be stunned by the incredible decor designed by Alex Papachristidis and Lisa McCarthy, be entertained by emcee Chuck Scarborough, enjoy gourmet dining with Olivier Cheng Catering, live entertainment with the Peter Duchin Orchestra, and an exciting auction with Jason Lamoreaux, all while mingling with furry friends available for adoption. The Bow Wow Meow Ball is not just an event—it’s a celebration of hope, love and the incredible bond between humans and animals.
What would you say is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is undoubtedly witnessing animals find their forever homes. There’s a unique, indescribable joy that comes from seeing an animal connect with their new family. It’s that magical moment when a match is made, and you can see the spark in both the animal’s and the adopter’s eyes.
It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that an animal who once faced uncertainty and hardship now has a loving home where they will be cherished and cared for. Each successful adoption is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved at ARF, and it reinforces my belief in the power of compassion and community.
