Many flock to the Hamptons to get a taste of fresh exhibitions, showcasing local talent of both established and emerging artists. From galleries to installations, here are some to check out this season.
7/16-8/7: DAVID LEWIS GALLERY
Admire the lively and grotesque paintings of Cuban-born artist Tomás Esson at David Lewis’ recently opened East Hampton gallery. Famously known for painting with innuendos of mythology as well as social and political commentary, Esson’s controversial pieces date back to his first exhibition, closed by Cuban authorities in 1988. This summer, you can find a plethora of paintings by Esson, as well as a site-specific “Wet Wall” drawing, at David Lewis Gallery. 53 The Cir, East Hampton, davidlewisgallery.com

6/25-11/1: THE RANCH
For the first time, Frank Stella’s “The Cabin, Ahab, & Pip” (1993) will be seen beyond the boundaries of his studio. The Ranch presents the work of the American artist through Sculpture, an exhibition highlighting a plethora of the artist’s impressive pieces as well as four other outdoor sculptures. 8/19-21: MONTAUK ART SHOW ON THE GREEN
It’s summertime, which means the Montauk Art Show on the Green returns to the East End with over 75 new and returning artists. 7/13-20, 7/23-8/9: THE LUCORE ART
Founded by artist Christopher Lucore, The Lucore Art showcases a variety of Long Island-based artists through frequent and exciting exhibitions. Lucore utilizes the ever-changing landscape of the gallery as his personal studio where he works to create abstract acrylic pieces with elements including color, texture and shape. This summer, art enthusiasts can look forward to upcoming shows featuring Montauk surrealist Lori Campbell, Montauk photographer James Katsipis and other innovative East End artists. 87 S. 7/29-Close of Summer: SKARSTEDT GALLERY
Fairly new to the East Hampton area but undeniably experienced in the art of curation, Skarstedt Gallery presents museum-level exhibitions by American and European artists. Skarstedt’s upcoming exhibition features sculptures by German artist Stefan Rinck, which will illuminate the Hamptons art scene with his whimsical yet edgy style. Some of Rinck’s eccentric works include a bear doing yoga, a fanged otherworlder called Shane and a fashionable dog wearing high-heeled clogs.66 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, skarstedt.com

7/2-31: SOUTH ETNA MONTAUK FOUNDATION
As the brainchild of Amalia Dayan and Adam Lindemann, South Etna Montauk’s exhibition space has been home to countless abstract art and still life collections. Recently, Faith Ringgold’s Jazz Stories, Robert Colescott: My Shadow and Lonnie Holley’s Tangled Up in de Kooning’s Fence have wowed the Montauk art scene with its full-scale exhibitions. Its latest and greatest show features a joint installment by Eddie Martinez and Sam Moyer, prompting visitors to contemplate art and the social commentary that it offers. 6 S.
