Celebrity chef, philanthropist and local Hamptonite Marcus Samuelsson buzzes his new home collaboration with West Elm and dishes his favorite spots around the East End.
When it comes to New York chefs, Marcus Samuelsson is top of the list. While you might recognize him from Top Chef Masters and Chopped All-Stars, the multihyphenate maven also touts eight (yes, eight) James Beard Foundation Awards, founded the Harlem-based Marcus Samuelsson Group and more. Now, he’s mixing things up with an exclusive home furnishings collection with West Elm (westelm.com). Marking his home debut, the 32-piece capsule pays homage to his love for food and entertaining while effortlessly fusing together his Ethiopian heritage, Swedish upbringing and NYC home base. “I’m thrilled to partner with West Elm to create such a personal collection—and my first set of home furnishings,” he shares. “Designed to help people come together at home, it celebrates the joy, artistry and ingenuity of food shared with friends.” Available in store and online, the collab is rife with an array of kitchen staples, ranging from a lavishly carved tableware set and layered brass pendant to upholstered dining chairs, bar stools and a rectangular dining table.
Here, in honor of hosting summer soirees and countless dinner parties with the new collection in his Hamptons home, the tastemaker shares his top destinations for weekending around the East End.
SAG HARBOR FARMERS MARKET
“On weekends, we love heading to the farmers market for local goods and produce. They have everything a chef needs: local vegetables, fresh seafood, pasture-raised meats, pickles, granola, handmade soaps and even knife sharpening.” eastendfarmersmarkets.com
MASHASHIMUET PARK
“Mashashimuet Park is a beautiful public green space with plenty of activities for an afternoon of rest or play. There are tennis and basketball courts for a game of pickup, along with a playground for the kids, and a vast lawn if you wish to picnic.” mashashimuetpark.org
Nestled in Sag Harbor for 20 years, Cavaniola’s is a local institution.
CAVANIOLA’S GOURMET & CELLAR
“I love this family-owned shop that’s been a mainstay in the Hamptons for a couple of decades. They have an amazing selection of cheeses, both domestic and from across the world, and great wines to pair them with.” cavaniolas.com
SAG PIZZA
“Sag Pizza is [my son] Zion’s favorite spot, so we’ve become regulars when spending time in the Hamptons. A family favorite, their wood-fired pizzas and antipasti are always a hit.” sagpizza.com
SAG HARBOR TAVERN
“The tavern is a brand-new spot to Sag Harbor, coming straight out of Red Hook, Brooklyn. One of their sister restaurants in the city is Hometown Bar- B- Que. The menu is delish and fun with really tasty burgers.” sagharbortavern.com
Sag Harbor Tavern serves an array of classics, like burgers, fish and chips, and creamy deviled eggs with caviar.
GRINDSTONE COFFEE & DONUTS
“Grindstone Coffee & Donuts is my go-to place for good coffee and fresh brioche doughnuts. It’s located by the marina, so there really isn’t a better way to start the morning by the water with some tasty treats.” grindstonedonuts.com
