Vanessa Gordon, Hamptons Lifestyle Expert, publisher of East End Taste magazine, and Film Fest Expert shares her top tips for navigating this year's Hamptons International Film Festival.
Where to Dine
The Hamptons is full of excellent options for dining. To avoid being late to your film and finding that ideal parking space, dine at a restaurant within walking distance to the theater/venue. In East Hampton, I recommend The 1770 House, Rowdy Hall, and The Palm. In Sag Harbor, I would suggest the American Hotel, Tutto il Giorno, and Lulu Kitchen & Bar, in Southampton, I recommend Little Red, the Southampton Publick House, and The Village Cheese Shop for a sandwich and soup.
What to Wear
Layers! Comfortable walking shoes are a must, a cropped jacket or tailored coat that can easily fold over the seat. Always keep an umbrella or poncho in your bag as well as a scarf for unexpected weather changes. A shawl or poncho is a great option for staying cozy and warm in the theater and transitions well to dinner afterward.
In East Hampton, park in the 24-hour lot or the Lumber Lane parking lot. Another option is near the train station or at Guild Hall. In Sag Harbor, there is a parking lot opposite The Beacon restaurant and one diagonally across from Provisions. In Southampton, you may park for three hours behind the Southampton Arts Center, or behind the movie theater. There is a third parking lot behind Little Red, adjacent to Agawam Park.
Pace Your Day
Do not overload your schedule! If you want to focus on seeing the films, I recommend viewing no more than two per day, plus one event. Have some time to rest, walk around, and stretch. If you are into fitness, take a class no later than 9:30 am to jumpstart. Eat your meals early, if possible. Also, do not forget to take advantage of the complimentary film festival transportation to and from the venues, sponsored by Hampton Jitney.
Where to Stay
The Baker House 1650 as two great fall packages and The 1770 House has some affordable rates. In Sag Harbor, stay at Baron's Cove or next door at the Sag Harbor Inn. In Southampton, Southampton Inn, 1708 House, and White Fences Inn in Water Mill are two great locations. All, except White Fences Inn, are within walking distance to the theaters.
In addition to the complimentary Hampton Jitney shuttles, Lyft and Uber are available (in select areas). Carpooling is always smart, especially for efficiency when finding parking.
