You’ve had a hand in constructing and renovating several exciting projects in the Hamptons. Tell us about a project you’re particularly proud of. In my 42-year career, there are literally hundreds of successful projects that we have accomplished, some with challenging details and construction methods. One project, in particular, is a waterfront new build in Eastport. The architecture is beautiful, with expanded arched structural roofs, standing-seam copper roofing on the arch and a witches hat turret in the front with inside details including a curved stairway and balcony with custom railings. Most interestingly, the owner is a classic car collector. We structurally designed the house with large steel members to eliminate several columns in the basement where the drive-down entrance allows up to 12 cars to be stored in the basement. We placed a large walk-on glass floor in the great room and entry for viewing these precious collectibles. The most memorable aspect of this project was the clients, who were some of the finest people I have ever had the opportunity to work with.
What can you tell us about construction trends you’ve seen taking off in the Hamptons? I have seen design trends change over the years, from the ageless traditional to the contemporary ’70s and ’80s and now the ultramodern. All trends are being supplemented with new technology, from energy-related components to smart home amenities. Although the modern trend seems to be a very strong desire for homeowners now, I believe the Hamptons traditional with some variations will always endure.

You have years of experience working in construction with your family. What’s the most important advice you can share with someone looking to build a new home? I can only advise that a trusting relationship between a client and the builder is the foremost important issue in taking on a project. The relationship between the builder and the architect is also important. I shy away from projects where owners and/or their architects are going out to bid with several bidders. What makes the most sense is to work with the architect and a reputable builder to work within the desired budget and details of the project to get to the finish line.
What’s the most important factor for you when taking on a new project? The most important factor is budgeting and scheduling. With the fluctuation in pricing, inflation and so on, it is important that there is transparency between the builder and the homeowners.
How do you like to approach a challenge in building or renovating a home? With our many years of experience, whether it be digesting the plans and site, arranging pricing or scheduling with subcontractors, each job has a somewhat different challenge. We take each project to heart and always consider scheduling since we never want to bite off more than we can chew!
