Fine art and fine spirits go together like a hand in a glove, but do aged sherry and cutting-edge technology mix? Apparently they do, and they mix very well.
The Macallan distillery teamed with Trevor Jones, one of the NFT world’s highest-selling artists, and a spirits-focused platform called Metacask on an exciting NFT auction package that sold for an impressive $2.3 million.
Bidders had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to nab a cask of Macallan’s first fill sherry butt aged for 30 years, alongside a one-of-one digital scan of a Jones’ oil painting “The Angel's Share,” as well as a one-of-one animation that highlights the painting’s most interesting elements.

The large sherry cask holds aout 608 bottles with an ABV of approximately 51.1 percent, marking it as the most valuable cask ever made available by the Scottish distillery even before it earned its multi-million dollar final price tag.

After a serious bidding war, user Oldcask took the prize with a final bid of $2,327,563. With a large-enough display screen, Oldcask will be able to view Jones’ full, uncompressed work in stunning resolution while enjoying a near lifetime supply of the fine Macallan sherry.
The auction was held and supported by Metacask, an NFT platform dedicated to whisky cask auctions. Metacask’s NFTs represent the buyer’s ownership of the cask, replacing traditional, paper-based certificates of ownership, which the platform believes is a much more secure and transparent form of proof.

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, use blockchain technology to create a verifiable chain of ownership for all manner of things. Art NFTs are the most well-known on the market, although sports memorabilia, timepieces, fashion brands and more have all gotten in on the new tech craze.
