Real Estate Broker Mala Sander on Living in the East End Year-Round

By Camille Cauti | August 3, 2018 | People

Busy broker and North Haven resident Mala Sander, a team leader at The Corcoran Group in Sag Harbor, never misses the boat.

My clients expect value; they are well-informed, savvy buyers who understand the Hamptons market. They always ask for open flow, lots of light and good outdoor spaces that are nicely landscaped for privacy. My clients respond to homes that are well-designed and furnished. Nicely furnished homes that are move-in-ready will sell fast and often with furnishings in place as part of the deal.

Up North

North Haven’s beautiful shoreline, abundance of waterfront properties and rural character create a very healthy demand for homes in the village. The mayor [Sander’s husband, Jeff] and the village planning/zoning board are doing much to preserve North Haven’s historic character and open space.

What Spare Time?

Living here year-round, there are always so many options—and literally so little spare time, since I’m often working 12-hour days, seven days a week. But a few things we absolutely love: We are boaters, so in the summer, favorite pastimes include sunset cruises and jaunts to restaurants (Claudio’s and Lucharitos in Greenport, Sunset Beach and Salt on Shelter Island, and others). We love to entertain at home, so a relaxed poolside meal is always on tap—often last-minute, and lots of fun! In the off-season, we move it indoors with fireplaces blazing! I need a good workout to destress and detox my mind, so you’ll often find me at SoulCycle, Tracy Anderson or the occasional boxing class.

Garden Style

We were so fortunate to have met Jack deLashmet early in the design process when we rebuilt our 1940s summer cottage into a year-round home. Jack created beautiful landscapes that blended the lines of the property and the waterfront, using dune grasses and beach vegetation to accent the water views. He created several rooms that we live in and enjoy all summer. We miss Jack [who died in 2016] and the opportunity to share the evolution of those gardens with him.

By the Boat

I like to get out on the water as often as possible. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Hamptons. The air and light are incomparable! We are hoping to take a run up to Newport with our boat this summer, but in the meantime we can be found chasing the sunset on many nights!
