Nestled amid the lush greenery of Sag Harbor, the home features an outdoor pool and waterfront access.
Interior designer Matthew Boland reimagines this Sag Harbor stunner by effortlessly fusing old with new to create a standout summer home fit for the whole family.

The Client
With warmer weather on the horizon, a flood of Hamptonites are returning to their summer homes for vibrant weekends away. For homeowners and recent newlyweds Peter and Michelle Worth, it was time to merge spaces and create a long-lasting family home that everyone could escape to. When it came to who would spearhead the project, Matthew Boland from MMB Studio Inc. (mmbstudio.com) was a natural choice. “I have worked with Matthew for over 20 years,” says Michelle. “We know one another’s taste so well it makes taking on projects easy. He understands us and how we want to live... He can mix the more expensive with the less expensive and make it a showstopper—that’s real talent!” Sitting in Sag Harbor, the 8,000-square-foot home was originally built in 2005 and purchased by Peter in 2016. Boland explains, “I started to work on the project as they began to date, and very soon after that they were engaged.” He jokes, “I literally married furniture, art and lighting from both of their separate households along with new pieces to create a sense of place and character that speaks to both of them.”
From the first foot in, guests are greeted with an eye-catching light fixture from Global Views and a vintage Lucite center table from Guy Regal Ltd.

The Priority
When asked about the aesthetic of the home, Boland’s answer is simple: accessible, recycled, unpretentious interiors. “For this project, we worked in extreme highs and lows—not because we had a tight budget, but because this is a part-time home that has a four-month window of use,” he explains. “It felt more responsible to be extremely careful as we allocated budget. Accessible price points and physically accessible product were important to the client.” The result? A smorgasbord of well-loved items from the couple’s four other homes—with ample space for gathering and entertaining. “This project is for a family both immediate and extended to enjoy: If there is a spill, it’s not a crisis; if the dogs rip all of the screen doors out (it happened), the screen doors are rescreened. It is carefree summer home that is about enjoying each other’s company one on one, day by day.”

The Process
No strangers to a redesign and renovation, the Worths revel in building new things together, whether that be businesses or summer homes on the bustling East End. “We love taking a house and turning it into a fabulous home,” shares Michelle. “It is a labor of love for us, and you have to love what you do because it can be very expensive, extremely time-consuming and sometimes frustrating when you can’t get materials or a project isn’t on schedule.” She adds, “You also have to have the personality to be able to walk away from a home when finished and start all over again.” In some cases, the duo will renovate and sell, and other times they’ll stay put, as they did with the 1920s Palm Beach estate they took on right before COVID. “A home reflects who you are, your taste, your style and how you want to live, and what’s most comfortable for those who live there. There’s no right or wrong way to create a home.”
A tub and walk-in shower await in the primary bathroom.
The Details
Just steps away from the shore, this Sag Harbor safe haven is complete with six bedrooms and nine baths. Here, clean lines and simple designs complement masterfully executed architecture and enviable landscape design. In nearly every room, towering panelled windows welcome inside picturesque views, while a flood of natural light illuminates each space. It’s both chic and functional, showcasing an oceanic-inspired aesthetic with hues of sea blues and crisp whites. As for the amenities? Lounge by the expansive outdoor pool and patio, catch a film in the fully equipped, all-blue home theater or go for an afternoon nap in the full toile guest suite. “This is a pet-friendly, grandchild-friendly, party-friendly home,” shares Boland. “It was laid out as a love nest for two with the ability to transform into a full house for all of the children and grandchildren and, of course, also all of their pets.”
The home theater is this property’s pop of color, complete with individual loungers in a matching shade of blue.
The Outcome
Just as impressive as its square footage and luxe amenities are the home’s exquisite interiors and preservation-minded design. From recycled furnishings to lavish light fixtures, Boland’s signature style of mixing the old with new comes into play in the most cohesive of ways to create a striking abode where opulence and functionality blend together. “The powder room ended up being one of my most favorite spaces on this project,” he shares. “It’s truly a jewel box. It was inspired by two discontinued sconces that were purchased first (because we loved them), and we knew they would have all of the answers. From those two burnished gold sconces grew a kaleidoscope of color and fun.” Apart from the home’s enviable specs, its fresh aesthetic and timeless touches are what makes this house a true Hamptons summer home for the whole family.
