Shape House, the cult urban sweat lodge that boasts fans like Selena Gomez and the Kardashian clan, is taking their zen out East. The California born company has gone from strength to strength, now boasting five locations in New York City, including a new home in East Hampton. We sat down with founder Sophie Chiche to discuss all things summer and sweat.
Summer is upon us! A time we're already sweating a lot already... why should people sweat more at Shape House?!
SOPHIE CHICHE: Our instinct is to avoid the things that make us uncomfortable. However, the things that make us uncomfortable, are usually the things that make us better. Sweating when it’s how the outside is no exception. Far-infrared sweating is a healthy way for your body to build up a heat tolerance. Allowing you to enjoy the sun and the sand all summer without that pesky heat fatigue.
What are some of the health benefits of sweating?
SC: A much shorter list would be what’s not a benefit of sweating.
Sweating makes your skin glow, it reduces your stress, it improves your sleep, it repairs your muscles and helps burn calories. Your body can keep working for up to 36 hours after your sweat. It’s a fix all for mind body and soul.
What can people expect from a sweat session?
SC: Expect to be taken care of from start to finish. We provide you with clothes and we tuck you into a far-infrared blanket for 55minutes while you watch your favorite show. You have a call button so we’re able to easily anticipate and accommodate your needs. We bring you lavender cold towels and alkaline water. After your session, we guide you to the relax room and are given oranges and tea. This is really “me” time. You tend to feel elated after a session and we want you to have a space to sit in that feeling.
What's your favorite thing to binge watch during a sweat?
SC: This Is US. We tend to recommend something light and comedic to keep your mind focused. However This Is Us, is just so special and I feel really in my body when I watch it. The fact that no one can tell if I’m crying or sweating is an added bonus.
What's the biggest misconception about sweating?
SC: That it’s gross. Sweat is beautiful. It’s literally your body crying in response to the care you’re giving it. That kind of communication with ourselves is invaluable.
What are you most excited about for this summer!?
SC: I tend to stay very in the moment, so I’m excited for whatever comes my way next. It might be a motorcycle ride to Big Sur with a gang of friends. That excites me.
