Guten appetit! Shippy’s reopens its doors in Southampton—serving up a newly renovated space and classic German fare.
“During our renovation, we strived to recreate Shippy’s layout, ensuring that stepping inside for the first time would still evoke the warm familiarity of Shippy’s with thoughtful updates,” shares Betts. “Though some structural adjustments were made to accommodate guests more efficiently, we retained the row of booths that have welcomed patrons for generations.
“What sets Shippy’s apart is not just its rich history as the oldest restaurant in the village, but also the genuine warmth and welcoming atmosphere that guests have come to love,” says owner John Betts. “With the reopening, we are blending the best of our past with a fresh outlook for the future, making Shippy’s a timeless and cherished destination for all members of the community.” Initially opened in 1954, Shippy’s has secured its spot as an East End staple, and after a well-deserved face-lift, the beloved eatery returns just in time for Oktoberfest. For longtime foodies worried about losing the cozy ambiance, fear not. With help from renowned local experts, the space stays true to its German roots—and Shippy’s signature green—with unique interior details and finds like its 1920s Parisian street lamps at the bar, authentic Bavarian Oktoberfest tables in the Biergarten, exterior French casement windows, entrance mosaic titles and much, much more. As for the food? Expect nothing less than a mouthwatering fusion of German American favorites. “One dish on our menu that holds a special place in my heart is the veal schnitzel,” says Betts. “As someone who spent a significant part of my childhood in Germany and Austria, this dish brings back an abundance of fond memories and nostalgia for those cherished home-cooked meals from years ago.” 36 Windmill Lane, Southampton
