Sundaes, sodas, shakes, oh my! Since 1958, Sip’n Soda has served up mouthwatering bites and oh, so delicious desserts—think homemade ice cream, triple-decker clubs and its signature lime rickey. We caught up with owner Mark Parash to talk family history, life in the Hamptons and how this historic Southampton eatery plans to stir up the summer.
Sip’n Soda’s unmistakable neon sign
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SIP ‘N SODA’S HISTORY? Sip’n Soda opened its doors in the summer season of 1958. My grandparents, William and Nicoleta; my dad, Paul; and Uncle Jim were all part of the beginning. We are in our 65th year and beginning the 66th season serving Southampton Village, and I am now the third generation!
HOW HAS THE COMPANY EVOLVED WITH THE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS? We have evolved but also remained true to who we are. We’re a luncheonette that was founded on great service, great food and amazing homemade ice cream. We have through the years adapted to changing trends and tastes. Since our founding, Sip’n Soda has consistently made sure our favorite staples have remained intact, while each generation has put their own touch on the menu through the years. From our original burgers and grilled cheese to our new additions like grass-fed burgers and avocado BLTs, we keep trying to move forward. Our classic ice cream flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry have been on our board since 1958, but we have added new flavors like black raspberry chip, salted caramel and fresh peach in the summer season. The one thing that remains unchanged is the extra-creamy consistency of our homemade ice cream from a secret recipe that has never been written down—if anything happens to me we might be in trouble!
From milkshakes and malts to large cones and ice cream sodas, the menu boasts a flavorful assortment of homemade treats
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? Pride, people and relationships. I’m proud that I’m continuing to carry on the family business and get to come across so many people on a daily basis—I love meeting new customers and many have become like family to me. The best part for me is seeing the multigenerational relationships that have continued. There are now fourth generations coming in and it’s great for me to see these families grow up and start families of their own. I also get to learn and hear great stories about my grandparents from longtime customers—I don’t remember them and this is a great way to connect.
ARE THERE ANY NEW MENU ITEMS OR PROGRAMS THAT YOU’RE EXCITED FOR THIS SUMMER? This summer will be fun and filled with lots of ice cream! We will offer new flavors, thirst-quenching classic drinks like our famous lime rickey, and our seasonal summer special menu will be coming out in June. There are lots of good things happening at Sips this summer!
Paul and Jim Parash.
HOW HAS THE HAMPTONS COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AND RESPONDED TO SIP’N SODA’S LEGACY? Our community is why we are the oldest food establishment in Southampton Village. From when we opened in ’58 the community has been there to support us. Through all the years, from very good to very stressful (COVID), they have helped keep our legacy going. I’m grateful that the Hamptons appreciates Sip’n Soda... and we appreciate them!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT LIFE IN THE HAMPTONS? Everything! My family, friends, the beauty of the East End, the quaint charming villages (each one unique with its own character). Our beaches are the best in the world. Food, fresh from the sea or the farms. All walks of life come together here—it’s the best!
Flavors include classic vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, as well as new additions like black raspberry chip, salted caramel and fresh peach
ANYTHING ELSE WE CAN BUZZ FOR THE SUMMER? We will be coming out with some fun ice cream promotions for the summer, and we will be open weekends until 9 p.m. starting in July! 40 NY-27A, Southampton, 631.283.9752, sipnsoda.com
