Gucci just announced a new NFT series, created in partnership with animated-celeb brand Superplastic.
Dubbed SuperGucci, the series was co-created by Gucci’s head of design, Alessandro Michele, and synthetic Superplastic artists Janky and Guggimon. SuperGucci is planned as a three-part series, with its first collection of NFTs set to launch on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Superplastic is a global entertainment brand famous for creating animated celebrities, designer toys and digital collectibles. The company has worked with Gorillaz, J. Balvin, Rico Nasty and more, but its own virtual stars Janky and Guggimon, Dayzee and Staxx, Kranky, and ShüDog are social media celebs in their own right.
Janky and Guggimon are Superplastic’s “core characters,” and although they may not have physical bodies, they’re presented and loved as real characters throughout the Superplastic universe, posting regularly to millions of followers on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, while their Superplastic figurines sell for hundreds of dollars.
For the SuperGucci collection, the characters become digital figurines covered in classic Gucci floral prints with equestrian caps and more. Each unique NFT is accompanied by an eight-inch tall, hand-made Italian ceramic sculpture design by both Gucci and Superplastic. The figurines, which were crafted by Gucci’s own ceramicists in Italy, mirror the NFTs’ classic Gucci patterns plastered over the body shapes of Janky and Guggimon.
It’s a limited series and only 250 ceramics were made. The first set of 10 NFTs will become available Tuesday, Feb. 1, on Superplastic's website.
This is not the first Gucci NFT drop. Back in June of 2021, Gucci sold its first NFT through an online auction hosted by Christie’s. The NFT was inspired by Aria, a four-minute film produced by Floria Sigismondi alongside Gucci’s creative director Allesandro Michele in celebration of the Italian fashion house’s 100-year anniversary. The film was created to accompany the official runway show and was released as an NFT after the fact.
