New York-based textile brand Eskayel debuts out East, its newest toile inspired by life in the Hamptons.

“I almost always derive my inspiration from a place I have lived or visited,” says Eskayel founder Shanan Campanaro. But perhaps this is not such a revelation. Take one look at her wallcoverings, textiles and rugs and you can feel their essence. What Campanaro depicts grabs at you, but is just beyond reach—coddled within its prism of rich pigments.
Such is the case with the East Hampton resident’s newest collection, Out East, in collaboration with longtime client Chloe Pollack-Robbins of Curious Yellow Design. In the new wallpapers, Montauk—the lighthouse, clam bar and radar tower—Sag Harbor—the windmill, theater and boats in the bay— and Sagaponack—the vineyards, stables and beach houses— come alive.

Campanaro breathes life into her designs—a feat that is often attempted but rarely successful, especially with a subject as wide-ranging as the Hamptons. “The thing is,” Pollack-Robbins explains, “the Hamptonsprovide a differentexperience for everyone, but there are iconic moments and views that will remind anyone of each special hamlet.” Using the Curious Yellow Design-sourced images of Hamptons landmarks, Campanaro sketched the patterns, which take the form of a cheeky yet elegant toile. “Toile, like the Hamptons, has a unique history,” Pollack-Robbins adds. “We love that it tells a story, and each vignette will attract adifferent viewer.”

Beyond the beauty of her work, Campanaro’s designs are sustainable to their core. “We work to only create products that are meant to last and do not harm the earth in their production,” she says. All Eskayel materials are made fromnatural fibers, and aportion of the company’s proceeds is donated to environmental nonprofits. For2020, 100% of donations will go to Vital Actions, which is focused on land restoration, reforestation and sea turtle protection.

Out East speaks to Campanaro’s love of the ocean and nature. “I love the beach,” the San Diego native says, “and to find out that such beautifulbeaches existed so close to [New York City] was a revelation.” Rendered in cobalt and Shell in both classic wallpaper and on a new paper weave, the collection reveals the personality of the individual hamlets. The rich blue on paper weave, however, catches Campanaro’s eye most. “I love the blue cobalt colorway on the paper weave,” she says. “The paper weave is a new wallcovering that I am superexcited about. Itoffers a much brighter groundthan our traditional grass cloth and adds beautiful texture.” And it would be ideal on the walls of any powder room or dining room according to home decor expert Pollack-Robbins.

Already, it’s set to be a busy summer for Campanaro.Beyond surfing in Montaukand spending time in the Springs home she shares with her husband and dog, she will release Out East in fabric, as well as several new wallpaper patterns debuting late summer and a new rug collection to launch in Eskayel’s expandedNew York City flagship showroom this fall.
