The Story Behind Iconic Hamptons Covers

By Lauren Epstein | July 19, 2018 | Culture People

The tales behind our magazine's most treasured images—told by the top talents who took them.

The covers of Hamptons have seen some major moments over the past four decades: ’80s supermodels strutting their stuff, top athletes in their elements, actors at home and unfiltered, chefs disrupting the food industry one decadent dinner at a time. But nabbing that coverworthy photograph? That’s another story. It takes a village—and, most importantly, the critical eye and technical talent of one very visionary photographer who, with the press of a finger, makes a magical Hamptons summer moment stand still. Here, five photographers who captured the Hamptons covers that still catch our attention today.

Nigel Parry

Cover: Brooke Shields, 2013
The experience: “Brooke Shields, she’s just lovely. We had a lovely time—who doesn’t in the Hamptons?—frolicking in the freezing cold water as if it was summertime. A great subject and great location make for a great shoot.”
About Parry: Parry began his photographic career in London in 1988. Since then, he’s photographed some of the most important influential figures of our time. Parry has exhibited his work worldwide, earning countless accolades, including the American Society of Magazine Editors Portrait Award, and has published four widely celebrated photographic books.

Robert Ascroft

Cover: Colin Jost, 2015
The experience: “I had worked with Colin the year before shooting the cast of SNL for the 40th anniversary of the show. For our [Hamptons] shoot we had BMW send us a new car to shoot in, and I also had Jost on a bicycle that was courtesy of Topping Rose House. It’s always great to have a prop for the subject to interact with.”
About Ascroft: Ascroft moves seamlessly through the landscape of celebrity portrait, fashion, beauty and advertising assignments. His images have appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone and more. He has shot the who’s who in the worlds of film, music, sports and politics.

Kate Orne

Cover: Padma Lakshmi, 2013
The experience: “Padma was a lot of fun to work with. She withstood the chilly temperatures with such grace and humor.”
About Orne: In addition to shooting images for numerous publications, including Elle, GQ and Vanity Fair, and fashion clients like Banana Republic and Theory, Orne founded Upstate Diary, a print and online publication featuring the lifestyles of artists and creators. She’s also spent the past decade focused on equality issues in Pakistan, working with local residents to strengthen their community and build a safer future for their children.

Melanie Acevedo

Cover: Rufus Wainwright, 2013
The experience: “I adore Rufus’ music and had been a fan for so long, so meeting him was so special.”
About Acevedo: A lifestyle and portrait photographer, Acevedo’s work has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, House & Garden and Condé Nast Traveler, among other magazines. She recently released The Authentics, a book that explores the private worlds of style-defining creative trailblazers around the world, including interior designer Miles Redd and actress Peggy Lipton, which she co-authored and photographed.

Stephan Würth

Cover: Serena and Venus Williams, 2011
The experience: “Serena came to the shoot first and we immediately hit it off. We talked tennis all day. At the end of the shoot, I got to hit a few shots against Serena with Venus as my doubles partner. The rally was only about a minute, but I’ll never forget hitting with two tennis icons.”
About Würth: Originally from Germany, Wu?rth discovered photography at age 14. His images have been featured in editions of The New York Times, Playboy, Vogue and more. Currently, he’s working on his new book, Tennis Fan, coming out in spring 2019.
