The coldest season of the year comes with a special set of skincare issues. Read on to save yourself with a slew of unctuous fixes available out East.
I don’t need to tell you winter wreaks havoc on the skin. Seasonal dermis conditions are the bane of our existence—and as we creep toward the cold, dry months, local spas are ready to help with those itchy skin and chapped lip dilemmas. Here is what I found.
Gurney’s Montauk
Vitamin C facial at Seawater Spa at Gurney’s Montauk Over at the local grande dame of wellness, a certain zesty nutrient is the key to ensuring optimal dermal care. The signature vitamin C facial is an intensive treatment for sensitive, dehydrated and environmentally challenged skin. The potions and masks used are rich in antioxidants, soothing laminaria algae and healing components that replace lost minerals. A finishing mask of vitamin C mixed with a moisturizing concentrate is applied for ultraprotection against free radical damage. After just one session with Christina, my skin was looking plump and supple in the best way possible. For extra indulgence, Debbie, Gurney’s massage guru, warmed me up with a Montauk stone massage. Not new exactly, but this rocky approach is an ideal winter-fighting tactic that uses elements from Mother Nature to bring relief to tense muscles and stressed emotions. 290 Old Montauk Highway, Montauk, gurneysresorts.com
Baker House 1650
Scrub at Baker House 1650 If you’ve never soaked in one of the thermal bathhouses in Budapest, the pool area at this East Hampton hotel is a worthy substitute. Surrounded by arched brickwork, pink granite boulders deposited by the glacier then hauled out by hand, and multihued limestone, the entire subterranean pool area is at your disposal during a 90-minute exfoliating treatment. This signature remedy performed by Dawn includes a full-body scrub followed by a quick rinse in the shower, then finished off with a 60-minute Swedish massage. You’ll find yourself drifting off to the sound of moving water and Chopin’s Nocturnes, to my delight on a heavy rotation here. Not to mention your skin will be perfectly smooth and renewed. 181 Main St., East Hampton, bakerhouse1650.com
Naturopathica
Moisture Drench Skin Conditioning Treatment at Naturopathica Saving the creamiest for last, this ultimate skin conditioning treatment for the body begins with a massage using a warm, mineral-rich seaweed wrap. Heather, whose hands struck a perfect balance between soft and “did I do something to offend you” firm, followed the 45-minute rubdown with a sea fennel massage wax to deeply seal in moisture for a silky, satin finish. I left so greased up, the slippers flew off my feet on my way out. But during a season when shedding skin is not exactly the desired objective, this was a very small price to pay for my dewy patina. 74 Montauk Highway, East Hampton, naturopathica.com
