Finished in hues of blue, this East Hamptons home is the ultimate summer getaway

Young Huh curates the ultimate Hamptons haven with an eclectic mix of pattern play and pops of color.

THE PROJECT

A couple in East Hampton decided to build a custom house in an outstanding location in the area. As they created their utopia, they hired Young Huh of Young Huh Interior Design to make the inside just as perfect. “The couple built this house that backs onto a nature preserve as their forever house,” Huh says. The designer worked together with the couple to finalize every detail. “They picked out their finishes and planned their furnishings and outdoor experiences before framing even finished.” The house itself is a six-bedroom, 4 ½-bathroom location in a charming, quiet spot.

THE PRIORITY

“They wanted a mix of contemporary and some warm traditional elements in their rooms,” says Huh. “They love blue!” With this established, Huh set out to create a peaceful oasis with rooms ranging from completely blue themed to mostly neutrals with accents of the color. The spot needed to be exciting to look at but still a restful place to come home to every day and for guests to escape to.

THE CHALLENGE

Huh was gifted with involved clients and an amazing location that made the project more than enjoyable. However, similarly to other recent projects, she struggled with supply chain shortages. “This project was done at the start of COVID, when the world was just finding out how deep the issues of supply chain would go,” Huh says. “It also happened during the foam shortage. Definitely unforeseen issues that took a bit of patience and pivoting!” While Huh and her clients had to adjust to a different timeline and be more flexible with products, she was still able to push past these issues to create a dream home for her clients.

THE DETAILS

A very open and light-focused layout made achieving a perfect flow in the home simple. Many of the main living spaces sit along a wall of large windows, one after another. “The kitchen, dining room and family room are vibrant and buzzy, with pattern play, color and striking works of art—many of which are originals,” Huh says. The color blue is a clear focus in the design, helping to bring cohesion from the living room to the family room and from the dining room to the kitchen. With a canvas of mostly white, Huh peppered in highlights of gold and warm browns throughout the house among the sea tones. Decor is consistent and simple across different spaces, with aesthetically pleasing books and flowers being common and other abstract, colorful pieces of art displayed on larger walls.

THE LIVING ROOM

Huh went bold for the formal living room space, taking the couple’s love of blue and running with it. “The living room is all about a gorgeous deep blue, feeling at once both chic and comfortable,” Huh says. A rich Benjamin Moore blue, interestingly named Gentleman’s Gray, covers the walls. Blue furniture sits throughout, including sofas and a chair from Kravet and Highland House, all three different patterns and materials. A Bunny Williams Home coffee table holds an assortment of bright blue books and a hint of orange highlights. Even the lamps are blue, and a geometric patterned rug of white and cerulean colors fills the space.

THE PRIMARY SUITE

One of the only rooms to stray from the blue-dominant pattern is the primary suite, which Huh describes as “warm, soft and serene in hues of green.” A mostly neutral space, quiet pops of true green, seafoam and sage appear around the room. Attached is a gorgeous en suite bathroom with sparkling tile floors and a giant metal and porcelain soaking tub.

THE OUTCOME

This house was already a dream come true because of its ideal location next to a nature preserve, but Huh was able to work with her clients to transform it into even more of a dream. Wood tones from the exterior are carried inside with light wood floors and beautiful painted shiplap walls. Large windows are a plus and add to the upbeat, light air of the space.
